Writer Richim Junianti wrote a pretty good script
Having never heard of this 2023 Indonesian supernatural horror film called Panggonan Wingit (also known as Haunted Hotel), I sat down to watch it here in 2024 because I had the chance to do so. And given my long-standing love of the horror genre and Asian films, I clearly didn’t need any persuasion to sit down and watch this film. It was certainly entertaining, but at the same time, the writer Rihim Junianthi used a lot of stereotypical horror images, which made some aspects of Panggonan Wingit seem a little ordinary and mundane.
Although I will say that the acting in the film is good
I’m not saying that this is a bad film, on the contrary, I definitely liked the plot, and I’m sure that newcomers to the horror genre will like this film. However, as a longtime horror fan, I found this film to be good but not impressive. Given my relatively short exposure to Indonesian cinema, I only knew the lead actress Luna Maya in this film.
I liked the special effects, props, scenography and wardrobe in the film
Actor Aggie Fedley, who plays the spiritualist Ky Danang, really did well in his role as he played a very memorable and convincing role. “Panggonan Wingit” has a lot of blood and visual chaos, but it is not excessive. Thus, director Guntur Suharyanto managed to take something that was used in moderation and make something good out of it.
But this is not the film that deserves more than one viewing
The duration of the film is 110 minutes, so perhaps it should have been cut more generously in the editing room. Of course, it’s worth sitting down and watching if you like horror and Asian genres. My rating for the 2023 film “Panggonan Wingit” directed by Guntur Suharjanto is five out of ten stars.
