Some of the currencies need to be mined by solving advanced cryptography tasks, and that requires a lot of knowledge, but also an unlimited power supply because the whole concept of the blockchain is very energy-consuming. Bitcoin is one of the currencies that if you want to earn it by yourself, you need to invest a lot in it. On the other side, coins like Ethereum or Ripple are available in known networks you need to join, so you can earn them. It’s on you to choose what works best for you.

Cryptocurrencies differ in terms of how their monetary value is established. Bitcoin’s monetary value is almost entirely dependent on supply and demand. Knowing that there is only a limited supply of bitcoins, prices go up or down commensurate with demand. If more people are buying than selling, the price goes up. Prices fall when and as sellers outpace buyers.

Transparency ensures safety from money laundering and terrorism financing with cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrency owners can leverage the benefits of private keys for encryption of their assets while ensuring that no centralized authority gains control over distribution of cryptocurrencies.

Another thing to consider is that miners also charge transaction fees. Bitcoin believers think that as mining subsidy decreases, transaction fees will increase, which also accrues to miners. On the other hand, many Bitcoin non-believers think the mining subsidy going to zero will reduce security to the point where it becomes vulnerable to attack.

Mining cryptocurrencies can be a profitable venture, but it requires a deep understanding of the coins you are mining, the hardware involved, and the costs associated with mining. While Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin dominate the mining scene, there are many other mineable coins like Monero, Dogecoin, and Zcash that may offer unique opportunities. Whether you mine solo or in a pool, and whether you use ASICs or GPUs, mining remains an evolving space with a lot of potential, provided you stay informed and prepared.

Bitcoin mining uses large amounts of electricity, which many argue adversely impacts the environment. Some argue Bitcoin miners use more electricity than some countries such as Argentina, and that much of this energy comes from dirty sources. Proponents argue that mining helps stabilize grids, gives opportunities to people in remote regions to earn a living where there are few other options, that much of the electricity used would have otherwise been wasted, and that the source of mining hashpower is becoming more renewable every year.

Monero is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that uses the RandomX algorithm, which is CPU-friendly. Unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, Monero aims to be mined using consumer-grade hardware like CPUs, making it more accessible for individuals without specialized ASIC or GPU hardware.

The image below, from the BlockChain.com blockchain explorer, shows a block subsidy being paid to an address that is owned by the miner who added the block to the blockchain. Near the top you can see that 12.5 BTC is being paid as the subsidy; the actual sum received by the miner (the full reward, 13.24251028 BTC) is larger, because it also includes the transaction fees for all the transactions in the block.
